FROM:        Susie Green, Student Programs Specialist

DATE:         June 23, 2008

First, I would like to begin by saying that I hope you all have remained safe throughout the recent flooding that has affected the area.  To those of you who were directly affected, my thoughts are with you.

I would also like to express my apologies for any confusion, frustration or anxiety you experienced surrounding the cancellation of the June session of College for Kids. The cancellation of the June session was due to a combination of factors including public safety, lack of power at Coe College, and extensive flood damage at Grant Wood AEA. As many of you discovered, these combined factors have made it very difficult to reach anyone by telephone or email regarding the program. So while it has been a difficult time, I appreciate the understanding and patience you have afforded Grant Wood AEA as we have worked to set up temporary office space and move forward.

At this point, the July session of College for Kids is scheduled to be held July 14-25, as originally planned. The June session will not be rescheduled. Those who were scheduled for the June session have the following options:

  1. receive a full refund for all tuition and fees, or
  2. move your registration to the July session (see list of closed classes above)

If you are interested in getting into the July session of College for Kids, please call me at (319)399-6775 or 1-800-798-9771 x6775.  Or email me at sgreen@aea10.k12.ia.usIf I do not hear from you by Monday, July 7th, I will automatically process your refund.

Finally, if you were scheduled for the June session and pre-ordered any College for Kids apparel (t-shirt, sweatshirt, bag) and would still like to receive it, please contact me by Monday, July 7th, so that we can make arrangements for you to pick it up at Coe or at Grant Wood AEA.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding in these unusual circumstances.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Grant Wood AEA's College for Kids is a summer program offering advanced level academic and fine arts courses in the college setting to talented and gifted students who have completed 6th, 7th or 8th grade.  Through the College for Kids experience, students are offered a “sneak peek” at advanced curricula more commonly found at the high school and college level.  Students also have the opportunity to further explore a hobby or a topic of interest not typically available in middle school general education.

Two College for Kids sessions are held each summer during the months of June and July, located at Coe College.  Classes are held Monday through Friday mornings (8:30 - 11:50 a.m.).  The dates for the 2008 program are:

Session A:  June 16-27, 2008 (cancelled)

Session B:  July 14-25, 2008

Students are identified by their school as eligible for the College for Kids Academic Enrichment strand or the Art/Fine Arts strand.  Eligible students must turn in a “Request for Registration Packet” form, provided by the College for Kids representative or art teacher from his/her school.  Upon receipt of the request form, Grant Wood AEA will issue a College for Kids Registration Packet to the student, via the school.
