Identification through testing, medical referrals and educational planning for students who are deaf or have hearing impairments. Services, recommendations and materials are provided by trained audiometrists, audiologists, and itinerant hearing teachers.
If your child displays any or all of these symptoms, she/he could have a hearing problem.

AUDIOLOGISTS are hearing specialists who have a minimum of a master's degree and must be licensed and/or certified by the state of Iowa. Audiologists identify and evaluate individuals with hearing problems and make recommendations for intervention. They are assisted by AUDIOMETRISTS who are trained to evaluate hearing thresholds.
Audiological services include:
- Diagnostic hearing evaluations
- Auditory screening programs for school age and pre-kindergarten students
- Consultation on hearing loss, middle ear problems, and the effects of each
- Educational follow-up
- Informational programs about amplification and hearing conservation
- Monitoring of amplification devices
- Participation in child study team meetings/staffings
- Liaison to community services and agencies

TEACHERS OF THE DEAF/HARD OF HEARING have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and must be certified by the Iowa Department of Education. Instructional programs range from placement in a regular education classroom with support services from an itinerant teacher to placement in a special classroom for students with hearing impairments.
Instructional services include:
- Instruction in the areas of language, auditory training, reading, speech and social/coping skills for students with hearing impairment infant through 12th grade
- Diagnostic educational evaluations
- Educational collaboration and follow up
- Consultation on hearing loss and its effects
- Informational workshops for classroom teachers
- Parent education and training
- Participation in child study team meetings and staffings for students with hearing impairments
- Liaison to community services and agencies
