iPad Update 12/16/11

by Stacy Behmer, Coordinator of Digital Learning
sbehmer@gwaea.org

Agency Purchased Apps Next Step
Those people who submitted an app order should check your email for a sign up form, so you can come in and pick up your Agency iTunes Account username and password and get some of your requested apps.

Once you have all of your Agency iTunes Accounts you will be given redeem codes to install your apps under that account. We will be offering times next week and then after the holiday break. If you attended the SLP or OT/COTA meetings recently and already have your account, please complete the form, but you do NOT need to sign up for a time to come in. We will email you when we have codes ready for you.

ipad

We are starting with the purchase of Tier 1 apps and are in the process of evaluating the Tier 2 requests. If you didn’t have a chance to order apps this time around we will have another ordering window in a few weeks.

iPad Site and User Group
There are some great things being shared on the user group, so you may want to sign up ASAP! There have been free apps, discounts on accessories, and success stories! Go take a look at it on our iPad support site: https://sites.google.com/a/gwaea.org/gwaea-ipad-project/discussion

App of the Week

zite

Zite is the featured app of the week! Take some time to read the review of this free app that lets you build your own personalized magazine and easily share what you are reading with others. This free app was on everyone’s iPad, so go take a look as you try to build your PLN.

Do you have an app that you would like to feature as our app of the week? Email ipad@gwaea.org to tell us which one it is, and why you like it so much!  If you submit a review that gets posted, you will be rewarded with a redeem code for an app from the Tier 1 list!

Thank you!
I want to thank everyone for their patience, questions and sharing!  These devices are already having a positive impact on student learning and I know it is only going to get better. iPad professional development opportunities are coming. Please check the Bulletin Board in January for more information.

The Bulletin Board will resume publication on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012.
Happy Holidays!

Write Women Back Into History Essay Contest - Deadline is Jan. 27, 2012

To give students a deeper and more relevant appreciation of women’s roles in history and celebrate March as Women’s History Month, the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, Iowa Department of Education, and the State Historical Society of Iowa invite teachers to encourage their students to enter the 28th Annual Write Women Back Into History Essay Contest.

2012 Theme: Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment

A student’s own thoughts on the significance of the woman’s contributions are important. Essays should identify 1) why the woman should be written into history (i.e., what meaningful contributions has she made to her community, the state, nation, or world?), and 2) why she is important to the student. Students should consider what people would learn about us from this essay 50 years from now. A successful essay will discuss why the student researched, read about or interviewed, and found the subject to be a role model; it should not merely be a biographical sketch.

The guidelines and entry form can be found here.

Please pass on to other leaders and students who may want to enter. Please feel free to contact Lori SchraderBachar at (515) 281-4470 or lori.schraderbachar@iowa.gov with any questions.
