The Iowa Rivers Project and IOWATER

The goal of the Iowa Rivers Project is to involve secondary students in an interdisciplinary study of a local river or stream in a way such that they become interested in local environmental issues and problem solving. The Iowa Rivers Project involves teachers from all disciplines of the typical secondary (grades 6-12) school curriculum in a study that centers on a local river or stream. Teachers collaborate in planning and facilitating the study, sometimes sharing planning responsibility with students.

IOWATER is a citizen volunteer water quality monitoring project. The mission of IOWATER is "to protect and improve Iowa's water quality by establishing and supporting a statewide volunteer water monitoring program." The Iowa Rivers Project is now partnered with IOWATER to provide educators with additional water monitoring support in the form of workshops and materials. For more information about training workshops and about this state-wide water monitoring program, please see their web site.
