Grant Wood Area Education Agency will host the Open Minds, Open Doors Conference for middle school girls on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This half-day event will be held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Approximately 550 girls in 7th-8th grades representing 35 schools will participate in the conference, which encourages girls to pursue career fields with foundations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). During their day they will visit with some of the 100 professional women working in STEM-related careers who are volunteering during the event to present workshops and staff exhibits.

“Open Minds, Open Doors offers young girls the opportunity to experience STEM careers, and to begin to visualize themselves in those roles,” said Susie Green, GWAEA student programs specialist. “It is also a fantastic opportunity for employers in and around Cedar Rapids to encourage and inspire girls, positively impacting their future workforce.”

The Open Minds, Open Doors Conference originated in 1996 as an initiative of the Cedar Rapids Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) with support from Coe College.

Grant Wood AEA provides educational services for 32 public school districts, 16 state accredited non-public schools, and eight independent accredited non-public schools in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties.
