Supporting Social-Emotional Behavioral Health (SEBH)

Grant Wood AEA provides a variety of services, supports and professional learning opportunities for districts and schools to address social, emotional, behavioral health (SEBH) within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). AEA building-based personnel including school psychologists, social workers, and special education consultants provide on-going, regular support to schools. Additionally, GWAEA has SEBH teams that can provide additional support including SEBH specific coaching and consultation for administrators, educators and district leadership teams.

Supporting Building Leadership Teams

PBIS is a multi-tiered system of support for SEBH. PBIS provides the framework for educators to implement evidence based practices designed to proactively address SEBH needs through prevention, teaching and intervention. The focus is on supporting positive, predictable and safe learning conditions. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS has been shown to reduce behavioral concerns in the classroom while improving student academic performance and the overall climate in classrooms and buildings. Evidence also has shown that these practices support the mental health of students within our schools. Grant Wood AEA offers professional learning and coaching support to implement PBIS.

Supporting District Leadership Teams

At GWAEA we have had a team of staff that have been learning about evidence based practices for supporting and implementing PBIS District Leadership Teams to create a shared vision, language and experience that makes everyone more effective.

Three main components for successful district or state PBIS implementation:

  • Leadership Team to actively coordinate implementation efforts
  • Adequate funding, broad visibility, and consistent political support
  • Groups to provide coaching support as well as a system for on-going evaluation

Some of the benefits of having a District Leadership Team include:

  • Consistency across leadership team and district
  • Employ equity of coaching and other resources across the district
  • Sustainability and accountability. What is going to be consistent across teams (tight-loose)
  • Can help connect with other District Priorities

Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF)

Currently, Grant Wood AEA staff are collaborating with several district and building leaders to install the Interconnected System Framework (ISF) in key buildings in the AEA service area. ISF is a structure and process to integrate Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and School Mental Health (SMH) supports within school systems. ISF enhances PBIS by:

  • expanding the continuum of comprehensive interventions in schools for students
  • utilizing a multi-tiered system of supports for students
  • supporting districts using data for decision-making
PBIS School Mental Health = Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF)

When resources, training, systems, data, and practices are blended, the projected outcomes are:

  • enhance school climate
  • improved relationships among family, students and staff
  • comprehensive continuum of supports for all children
  • youth feel connected and safe at school
  • reduced stigma of mental health
  • reduced bullying

Behavior Specialty Team: SEBH Coaches

The SEBH Coaches (formerly known as Behavior Coaches) collaborate with PBIS, IFS and the CBST to support districts with implementing evidence-based practices at both the system level and individual student level.
  • At the system level, SEBH Coaches support the implementation of evidence based practices to support SEBH for all students.
  • At the individual student level, SEBH Coaches provide consultation and coaching  to building based AEA and LEA staff about social, emotional and behavioral principles and the provision of evidence-based instruction and intervention for students.
  • At the individual student level, SEBH Coaches collaborate with the CBST to support AEA and LEA staff with individualized student plans for addressing challenging behavior.

Behavior Specialty Team: Challenging Behavior Support Team (CBST)

The Challenging Behavior Support Team (CBST) provides intensive level support to districts and buildings to support students with significant challenging  behavior.  They support AEA and LEA staff in the development, implementation and evaluation of functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans. This includes training, modeling and assistance in behavioral instructional practices, strategies and content while integrating research into the design of best practices.
