Grant Wood AEA Open Minds, Open Doors Conference

22nd year of STEM conference for middle school girls

Grant Wood Area Education Agency will host the Open Minds, Open Doors Conference for middle school girls on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This half-day event will be held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Approximately 550 girls in 7th-8th grades representing 36 schools will participate in the conference, which encourages girls to pursue future career fields with foundations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The students will visit with some of the 100 professional women working in STEM-related careers who are volunteer presenters.

“It is always an exciting day when you have the opportunity to create a spark for a young girl,” said Susie Green, GWAEA student programs specialist. “Our line-up of presenters is quite diverse - from naturalists, medical professionals and engineers, to data analysts, chemists and coders.”

The Open Minds, Open Doors Conference originated in 1996 as an initiative of the Cedar Rapids Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) with support from Coe College.

Grant Wood AEA provides educational services for 32 public school districts, 16 state accredited non-public schools, and eight independent accredited non-public schools in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties.
