Substitute Authorization ClassSubstitute Authorization

This 20 instructional hour course is designed to meet the requirements for Substitute Authorization. The course addresses the four components required by the Board of Educational Examiners including Classroom Management, Diversity, Ethics, and Strategies for Learning.

Upon successful completion of the program the participant may apply to the Board of Educational Examiners for authorization to substitute teach. Iowa licensure also requires a state and federal background check.

Receiving a substitute authorization will allow an individual to substitute PK-12 for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment and no more than 10 of 30 days in one assignment.

An individual who holds a paraeducator certificate AND completes this course will be authorized to substitute in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed.

Audience
Persons with B.S. or B.A. from a regionally accredited institution outside of education who want to substitute PK-12, and certified paraeducators who want to become authorized to substitute teach in the special education classroom to which they are assigned.
