Upcoming Substitute Authorization Classes
This 20 instructional hour course is designed to meet the requirements for Substitute Authorization. The course addresses the four components required by the Board of Educational Examiners including Classroom Management, Diversity, Ethics, and Strategies for Learning.
Upon successful completion of the program the participant may apply to the Board of Educational Examiners for authorization to substitute teach. Iowa licensure also requires a state and federal background check.
Governor Reynold's proclamation on July 17, 2020, temporarily changed the requirements for substitute teaching. Anyone with a Substitute Authorization who is at least 20 years of age, has completed a minimum of 60 college credits, an Associate's Degree or a Baccalaureate degree may serve as a substitute an unlimited number of days in any assignment PreK - 12 except Driver's Education. Paraeducators who hold the Paraeducator Certification and Substitute Authorization are able to sub in any classroom setting PreK - 12 (except Driver's Education) on a temporary basis.

Please see this special COVID-19 UPDATE - Use of Substitute Teachers. Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a new proclamation as of July 17, 2020, which allows for increased flexibility in the use of substitute teachers during the disaster emergency period.
