Coaching for Learner Variability
This session builds on learning from the Professional Learning Series Year 1 and provides a foundation for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by exploring learner variability, the brain and neuroplasticity, and knowing students. The goal is to build background knowledge and connections to make the case for UDL. Participants will explore their own learning variabilities and recognize that there is no average learner. With this broader vision, participants will connect brain science to mindsets, then explore their own and teacher mindsets about variable learners. Participants will also consider how learner variability is supported in their context and what common barriers they face in achieving an Optimal Learning Environment without lowering the bar for standards-aligned instruction. Coaches/mentors deepen their knowledge of UDL through an interactive exploration of each of the UDL principles and engage in a coaching conversation, guided by the Planning Conversation Guide, identifying entry points to support their work.
