Iowa History Month and Social Studies Standards
Iowa History Month is celebrated in March and this year we celebrate Iowa’s 175th anniversary! What a great time to revisit Iowa history requirements in the new Iowa Social Studies Standards for grades K-12. The Iowa Historical Society has worked with many experts to create quality learning materials to support teachers in meeting those teaching standards by integrating primary and secondary source documents.
Goldie Kits for grades K-five have been created by the Iowa Historical Society. Resources include entire units of study with primary source documents, inquiry questions, literature, and all are aligned with the new Iowa Social Studies Standards as well as literacy standards. Better yet, they are all available online for FREE. Soon, these kits will also be available for buildings on a trial basis. If you would like to learn more about the Goldie Kits and how to use them, contact Grant Wood AEA literacy consultant Andrea Compton.
In addition to the Goldie Kits, Primary Resource Toolkits are available for teachers of all grade levels and may be used with all primary sources, however, they also offer a searchable database of Iowa Primary sources that could be examined. Click below to access the toolkit for your grade level. Click here to watch a video demonstration on how to search the database.
