Opening Day for the Cedar Rapids Kernels Summer Reading Program

For the third year, Grant Wood AEA has partnered with the Cedar Rapids Kernels to help parents make reading an important part of their children's summer.

The Kernels Summer Reading Program is designed to help encourage students Pre-K – 5th grade stay engaged in their educationChild shown reading book. Text reads "Kernels Summer Reading Program" outside the classroom.

Students can log their reading minutes on their reading program scorecard. Just like baseball, students must make their way around the bases to hit a home run in the Kernels Summer Reading Program. To keep everybody motivated to read, the Kernels have prizes at each base (benchmark) along the way:

  • 1st Base Prize 250 minutes - A free ticket to a Kernels Game in 2021 and a $5 opening deposit from Hills Bank
  • 2nd Base Prize 500 minutes -  A free Kid's Buffet at Pizza Ranch, one free pass for unlimited access to the bounce castles at a Kernels 2021 game, and 1 FREE admission to the Play Maze and a $5.00 Game Card at The Play Station in Cedar Rapids
  • 3rd Base Prize 750 minutes - A Kernels Pennant and Kernels-themed coloring book.
  • Home Run Prize 1,000 minutes - A Mr. Shucks jersey pillow

Students can bring their scorecards to the Kernels Bimm Ridder Diamond Shop, opening for the season Monday-Friday 10 AM – 5 PM on April 12 with prizes available as soon as April 26. All scorecards MUST be submitted by August 22, 2021. The Kernels also are offering curbside pick-up for those preferring to not enter the store, and you can call 319-363-3887 for that option.
