2021 Summer Youth Leadership Academy
WHAT IS YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (YLA)?
YLA is an introduction to leadership skills for youth with disabilities. The training consists of five 2 hour sessions. All sessions will be held virtually. YLA is presented jointly by the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, Iowa Department of Human Rights, Access 2 Independence and UI Health Care Center for Disabilities and Development.
WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN?
The five themes will include leadership, goal-setting, self-determination, civic engagement, and social networking and mentoring. All sessions will be interactive.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND?
We are offering two separate statewide trainings. One is for students ages 14-17; the other is for students ages 18-21. Each cohort will consist of 7-10 students from Iowa communities.
WHEN WILL TRAININGS BE HELD?
- Monday, August 2 through Friday, August 6
- Morning Session: 10:00 a.m. - noon
- Afternoon Session: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Graduation Ceremony will take place on August 6 during the last hour of each session.
Applications due by June 18, 2021
Program staff will review applications and interview candidates from June 21-25 and will make final selections on July 2. There will be a parent orientation after participants are selected (likely mid-July).
