This workshop provides an overview of Social Emotional Engagement - Knowledge and Skills (SEE-KS) as a framework for fostering social emotional engagement, presenting information in multiple ways, and promoting student participation and relationships at multi-tiers of support. Participants will:

  • Learn how the application of research in the social neuroscience of social emotional engagement fosters our ability to create supportive learning environments where social emotional engagement is "fuel" for a child’s learning.
  • Learn strategies for measuring student engagement, specially designed instruction to address student engagement within everyday classroom lessons and for building capacity through teacher-to-teacher mentorship.
  • Work in groups where they will collaborate with their peers, share their knowledge and ideas, and have information presented through a range of modalities.

Presenters: Emily Rubin and Jen Townsend

Emily Rubin, M.S., CCC-SLP is the director of the Educational Outreach Program at Communication Crossroads in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a speech-language pathologist specializing in autism and related social learning disabilities. Rubin is a co-developer of the Social Emotional Engagement – Knowledge and Skills (SEE-KS) professional learning approach and the co-author of SCERTS, a criterion referenced assessment tool and framework for social and emotional development.

Jen Townsend is an educational consultant with expertise in social emotional learning differences, including autism spectrum disorders. She is also the owner of Universal Access Consulting, LLC, a company that specializes in professional development and collaborative consultation. She is the co-author of the Social Emotional Engagement Knowledge and Skills (SEE-KS) professional learning approach.
